Packaging & Packaging Waste - recycling and recovery targets

Each year recovery and recycling targets are set for UK businesses to meet. These targets are designed to enable the UK to meet the recovery and recycling targets specified in the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive by the deadline of 31st December 2008.

Business targets for 2008-2010

The UK Government has set  "business" targets which must be met by obligated companies each year to ensure that the UK meets its national targets as set under the EU directive. The UK business targets are higher than the directive targets as under the UK system smaller businesses are excluded from the obligations and so only a proportion of all packaging is obligated whereas the EU directive targets apply to all packaging waste.

The business targets, which should be used by businesses to calculate their obligations, and which are designed to enable the UK to meet the Directive targets are set out in the below table:
