Strategy & Legislation: Legislation Directives: EU Landfill Directive
Landfill Directive Implementation Group
Overview
The Landfill Directive Implementation Group (LFDIG) brings together waste management and producer industry stakeholders representatives and regulatory and policy officials for advice and input on various issues related to implementation of the EU Landfill Directive. The Group first met in its present form in March 2003, having continued the work of the former Annex II Group. This latter group provided stakeholder input into the process and negotiations in Europe that developed Council Decision 2003/33/EC establishing criteria and procedures for the acceptance of waste at landfills (the Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC))
A formal consultation was held in 2003 on the amendments to the Landfill (England and Wales) Regulations 2002 necessary to implement the WAC. LFDIG provided stakeholder input into drawing up the consultation document and discussed particular issues during the consultation process. As a result, Amending Regulations implementing WAC in England and Wales, came into force in May 2004.
LFDIG continues in its role of providing stakeholder input on Landfill Directive implementation issues by commenting on such matters as the criteria for monolithic wastes and limit values for polyaromatic hydrocarbons in inert waste.
The Group has an important role in the wider context of hazardous waste management and its discussions are reported to the Hazardous Waste Forum.
