Kerbside experiences report

Defra are pleased to be able to publish this report on the experiences of authorities with kerbside recycling schemes chosen by Defra for funding in Round 2 of the NWMRF, as this category of scheme accounted for nearly 75% of the projects funded.

This report was compiled using the experiences of a cross section of 20 English authorities, selected according to the number materials collected, geographical location and authority type. Detailed consultation was undertaken with the participating authorities, in order that it would be written from a local, as opposed to a central government standpoint. Rather than concentrating exclusively on the Defra funded schemes, the report has taken on a more holistic approach, looking at the whole service provided by the authority.

Additionally, when reporting on the schemes themselves, instead of simply examining the period in which the Defra funding took place, the report considers how the projects have continued to perform, focusing on any developments and additions that have been incorporated into the initial schemes. It looks at the lessons that have been learnt from each of the schemes reported on, the intention being that authorities operating similar schemes will be able to learn from these experiences and use them in any expansion of their existing systems or for those planning to introduce new collections.

This report was produced for Defra by Eco Alternatives Limited and is made up of a main report and supporting appendices, each of which is a stand alone case study of a specific authority’s collection arrangements.
