Sustainable Development Education Panel
First Annual Report 1998
Introduction
-
This is the first Annual Report of the Sustainable Development Education Panel whose membership is set out at annex 1. When we were set up in February, we were tasked with reporting to the Deputy Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Education and Employment on a very broad remit (see annex 2). This covered all aspects of education, both formal and informal, for adults and children, business and Government. Our interim report in July set out the rapid progress that we had made as a result of the energy and commitment of the Panel's membership. This energy and commitment has continued over the past months and this Annual Report now reports our progress over our first year and looks to our work over the coming year. It will cover the following areas:
Key achievements
Education for Sustainable Development
Our Goals for 2010
Recommendations for action
Future work programme
-
In our interim report we identified three key principles. These are:
-
sustainable development is the responsibility of everyone;
-
education for sustainable development needs to pervade every aspect of life;
-
the UK's prosperity in the long term depends on our capacity to learn about sustainable development.
-
-
These three principles underlie all our work. We are also clear that our work concerns lifelong learning of all kinds, not just assessed learning. It must involve individuals and organisations, especially business. Whilst we are pleased with the progress that we have made so far, we fully recognise that this is the start of the process, there is much more to be done, and many issues to explore further.
-
In this Annual Report we want to report on our progress; challenge a broad range of organisations to act to promote education for sustainable development; and set ourselves a challenging work programme for the year to come.
