In northern Britain, just over a fifth of the 274 species are classified as endangered (23 species) or vulnerable (35 species) as defined by the IUCN (The World Conservation Union).

In southern Britain, just over a quarter of the 298 species are classified as endangered (12 species) or vulnerable (66 species). Categories are based on annual rates of change estimated from long-term trends from 1968–2002.

The criteria for the categories are:

  • endangered = decline of more than 50 per cent;
  • vulnerable = decline between 30 and 49 per cent;
  • decreasing = decline between 0 and 30 per cent;
  • increasing = increase of more than 0 per cent.
