Status of Biodiversity Action Plan priority species and habitats in the UK: 2005

Priority species and habitats are those that have been identified as being the most threatened and requiring action under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) which was published in 1994 in response to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
There were 288 assessed species for which the status was known in 2005 and 176 (62 per cent) were assessed as stable or increasing. There were 33 assessed habitats for which the status was known in 2005 and 16 (48 per cent) were assessed as stable or increasing.
For 202 species and 19 habitats the status was known in both 2002 and 2005 (not shown separately). Of the 202 species, 70 (35 per cent) were declining or lost in 2005 compared with 87 species (43 per cent) in 2002. Of the 19 habitats, 8 were declining or lost in 2005 compared with 9 in 2002.
