The most numerous British mammals

Great Britain

most numerous British mammals

For most species of mammal in Great Britain it is only possible to make broad estimates of numbers, either by estimating abundance relative to other species or by multiplying the estimated population density of a species in a particular habitat by the amount of suitable habitat in the country.

Using such methods the most numerous wild mammal in Great Britain is the field vole with an estimated population of 75 million. The grey squirrel, which is one of the mammals most often seen by the public, has an estimated population of 2.5 million.

Note: Great Britain is the term describing the combination of England, Scotland, and Wales.
