Provisional report on waste infrastructure
- Operational waste facilities in England and Wales (PDF 188KB) - last updated December 2006
This provisional report contains the number of facilities recorded as being available to accept waste on the last day of June 2006 by the Environment Agency under Waste Management Licensing and the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive Part A(1) (IPPC). It does not include facilities operating under an exemption from the Waste Management Licensing Regulations or Parts A(2) or B of the IPPC Directive permitted by Local Authorities. As a site can hold multiple licences or permits to reflect the processes undertaken the total number of facilities contained in this report will be higher than the number of sites dealing with waste.
The A18 Incinerator code includes sites permitted to deal with Municipal, Hazardous and Clinical Waste, Sewage Sludge, Cement Kilns permitted to burn Waste as a fuel and some Small Scale Incinerators disposing of animal carcasses (e.g. Pet Crematoria).
The classifications of landfills given here applies prior to the full implementation of the Landfill Directive in July 2005. Additionally, all sites listed as co-disposal ceased to operate as co-disposal sites by July 2004. In future landfills will be classified as inert, non-hazardous and hazardous.
Work is ongoing between Defra's Waste Data Strategy team, the Environment Agency and the Welsh Assembly Government to improve the quality of data held on waste.
