e-Digest Statistics about: Waste and Recycling

Minerals waste

Table 9 shows the estimates of minerals waste arising since 1990 for the six categories of minerals waste used in table 1: colliery, coal, china clay, clay, slate and quarrying. The overall trend shows waste arisings decreasing, due to the declining deep-mined coal industry.

Minerals waste estimates are based on the ratios of waste to product. As in previous editions of the Digest, the production data has been taken from the current volume of the United Kingdom Minerals Yearbook [7] compiled by the British Geological Society. The waste data is calculated from the table "United Kingdom production of minerals 2000-2006 ". Table 1 includes data for the most recent year and table 9 sets out the trends in the waste estimates since 1990. These revise previous estimates in earlier editions of the Digest. When referring to these tables it must be borne in mind that it is normal practice in common clay extraction and opencast coal mining to replace most of the generated waste in the resulting void.
