e-Digest Statistics about: Waste and Recycling

Resource recovery and recycling of materials from waste streams

Glass

Table 22 shows the weight of glass cullet collected and recycled in the UK between 1984 and 2007. Glass consumption is thought to have increased from 1.8 to 2.65 million tonnes during this period. Previous estimates are now believed to be underestimates as retailers have under-estimated imports of filled glass bottles. Estimates of glass recycled as a proportion of consumption may, therefore, be too high.
