Municipal waste management: 2005/06
United Kingdom
In 2005/06 there was 35.1 million tonnes of municipal waste arisings in the United Kingdom. Landfill was the dominant waste disposal method in 2005/06 making up 64 per cent of the total. About 12.3 million tonnes of waste (35 per cent of the total) had some value recovered by recycling, composting or energy recovery. Of this about 8 per cent involved incineration with energy recovery. The amount of municipal waste recycled/composted made up nearly 27 per cent of the total.
