The amount of household waste collected in England in 2006/07 was 25.9 million tonnes. 30.9 per cent of this waste was sent for recycling or composting. This household recycling rate has increased from 7.5 per cent in 1996/97. Green recycling (composting) has increased from just 1 per cent in 1996/97 to 11 per cent in 2006/7 and dry recycling has increased from 6 per cent in 1996/97 to 19 per cent in 2006/07.
This shows that progress towards the Waste Strategy 2007 target to recycle/compost 40 per cent of household waste by 2010 is on track.
