In England in 2006/07 a total of 29.1 million tonnes of municipal waste was collected. 58 per cent (16.9 million tonnes) went to landfill, down from 62 per cent (17.9 million tonnes) in 2005/06. Around 42 per cent of total waste was recycled, composted or incinerated with energy recovery.
There are some regional variations. In the West Midlands almost 30 per cent of total waste was incinerated with energy recovery in comparison to the England average of 11 per cent.
