Estimated total annual waste arisings, by sector

General industrial and commercial waste made up 32 per cent of total commercial and industrial waste. This typically consists of paper and packaging, floor sweepings and general rubbish. About 16 per cent of industrial waste and 52 per cent of commercial waste fell into this category.

Apart from general streams the largest waste components were mineral wastes and non-metallic wastes (including paper and card), each comprising 20 per cent of the total.

Other significant waste components were chemical wastes (11 per cent) and metal and scrap (5 per cent).
