Municipal waste management

Landfill was the dominant waste disposal method in 2006/07, making up 58 per cent of the total down from 62 per cent in 2005/06. For the last five years the actual tonnage of waste being disposed of in this way has also decreased.

About 12.2 million tonnes of municipal waste (42 per cent of the total) had some value recovered by recycling, composting or energy recovery. Of this about 11 per cent involved incineration with energy recovery, a similar amount to 2005/06.

The amount of municipal waste recycled in 2006/07 made up 31 per cent of the total, up from 27 per cent in 2005/06 and 23 per cent in 2004/05.
