Key Facts about: Waste and Recycling

Materials collected from household sources for recycling, 2006/07

England

Materials recycling through local authority schemes

In 2006/07 local authorities reported that around 8.0 million tonnes of household waste (31% of total household waste) was diverted for recycling or composting through schemes run by local authorities or organisations working in partnership with them. This shows that progress towards the Waste Strategy 2007 target to recycle/compost 40% of household waste by 2010 is on track.

In 2006/07 the largest component that was recycled/composted was compost (36%), this was followed by paper and card (19%) and then co-mingled materials (15%).

Co-mingled collections are the collection of a number of recyclable materials in the same box or bin e.g. paper, cans, plastics, this has grown in recent years.
