Municipal Waste Statistics 2006/7

Summary statistics for local authorities, including household recycling and composting rates for 2006/7, are available in the Excel workbook for download here.

Revision to 2006/7 estimates (22nd November 2007)

A small revision has been made to the residual household waste figures for London and hence England. This was due to better information on the household - non-household split of MSW being provided to the Audit Commission by a London waste authority. The effect of the revision is to reduce the total household waste estimate for London and England by around 80 thousand tonnes. This increases the London household recycling and composting rate from 22.4 per cent to 22.9 per cent. The effect on other statistics is small and in most cases not observable after rounding. All figures relating to municipal waste are unchanged.

The tables showing summary estimates, by region, for 2006/7, together with results for earlier years may be found in the Excel workbook for download here.

Estimates of the different types of material sent for recycling by collection method are available in the Excel workbook for download here

This is the third year that results are based on information supplied by local authorities in England to WasteDataFlow. For 2005/6 and 2006/7, there has been a 100 per cent response rate.

Key Facts:

  • Household recycling and composting rate in England increased to 31% in 2006/7 from 27% in 2005/6
  • Total municipal waste increased by 1.4% to 29.1 million tonnes
