In 2004 the public sector in the UK spent an estimated £5.9 billion on environmental protection expenditure. Nearly 60 per cent of the spending was on solid waste management. The next largest area of expenditure was nature protection and landscaping - around 12 per cent – and about 10 per cent was spent on the reduction of emissions of pollutants to water and to the atmosphere.
