Between 1980 and 2006 energy use for transport increased by 68 per cent, mainly as a result of an increase in road traffic over the same period. Domestic energy consumption rose by 22 per cent between 1980 and 2004; it has declined since and in 2006 was 14 per cent above the 1980 level. Since 1980 there has been a 33 per cent decrease in energy use by industry.
