Key Facts about: Radioactivity
Artificial sources: Occupational
United Kingdom
Workers in certain occupations may receive doses of radioactivity as a result of their work.
- the legal dose limit for adult whole-body exposure is currently 20 millisieverts per year (mSv/year)
- in 1997 the average annual dose for occupationally exposed workers was 1.6 mSv, with very few workers receiving doses exceeding 15 mSv
- there has been a definite and sustained downwards trend in doses since the mid-1980s, for example, for workers in the nuclear industry, the average annual dose has fallen from around 2 mSv to 3 mSv in the 1980s to around 0.6 mSv in 1997
