Artificial sources: Direct radiation (Direct shine)

United Kingdom

Close to a few nuclear installations the public receive external doses from direct exposure to gamma and neutron emitters located on the sites; this is sometimes called direct shine.

This is the most significant exposure pathway affecting:

  • members of critical groups at a number of first generation nuclear reactors;
  • and from the Amersham radio-isotope site.
