Countryside Survey 2000

Please note:

The latest in this UK-wide series of Surveys is currently taking place, making the whole series even more valuable. The results and analyses from the 2007 Countryside Survey will be available in Autumn 2008.

The Countryside Survey 2000 (CS2000) [6] (see www.cs2000.org.uk) for Great Britain, funded by Defra, the Natural Environment Research Council and other sponsors, gives important and unique data on the landscape and habitats of Great Britain. CS2000 builds on field surveys undertaken in previous years (1990, 1984, 1978) and therefore allows temporal change in the countryside to be assessed. A similar Northern Ireland Countryside survey has also been completed (NICS2000).

CS2000 involved detailed field recording and mapping, providing information on stock and condition of habitats and landscapes and on the variety and abundance of the plant species associated with them. The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) undertook the fieldwork for CS2000. The field survey covers both terrestrial and freshwater habitats and key landscape features such as walls, hedges and ponds. It is important to note that the fieldwork was undertaken on a sample basis, stratified in order that a reliable estimate of all broad habitat types in the Great Britain could be made. 569 random 1km survey squares were selected and surveyed during 1998 and 1999. More information on the fieldwork can be found in the report on the Countryside Survey 2000 [6].

In addition to the fieldwork a Land Cover Map (LCM2000) (see http://www.ceh.ac.uk/data/lcm/) was produced using satellite imagery. This gives a picture of broad habitats in the UK, and combining this data with that from the CS2000 extends the range of analysis that is possible.
