Pollution incidents in England and Wales are investigated by the Environment Agency. The chart shows the number of incidents in 2005 which had a major (Category 1) or significant (Category 2) impact on each of three media (water, land or air). Some incidents had an impact on more than one medium and appear in more than one column. Water, air and land results cannot be summed to give overall results because of double counting of incidents.
The sewage and water industry caused 24 per cent of the major/significant water pollution incidents and was the biggest source of identified water pollution incidents. Waste management was the biggest source of the major/significant identified air and land pollution incidents and caused 58per cent of air pollution incidents and 23 per cent of land pollution incidents.
For many pollution incidents the source cannot be identified.
