Targets are set each year for water companies in England and Wales to reduce leakage. In 2007/8, 2,468 megalitres per day of water put into the supply in England and Wales were lost through leakage. This represents a fall of 5 per cent over the last five years and 36 per cent since the peak in 1994/5.

'Distribution losses include all losses of drinkable water between the treatment works and the highway boundary. Supply pipe losses are leakage from the customer's pipes between the highway boundary and stop tap.
