Emissions of Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) and Hydrogen Fluoride (HF)
Hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride are gases that cause acidification. Table 23 and Table 24 show trends in estimated HCl and HF emissions by source. Total HCl emissions fell by 94 per cent between 1990 and 2006, and HF emissions by 48 per cent, reflecting a similar decrease in emissions from power stations, the main source for both chemicals. There was also a smaller peak in HF emissions in 2003, mainly as a result of increased coal combustion in power generation.
