Carbon monoxide emissions fell by 72 per cent between 1990 and 2006.
Road transport is the major source of carbon monoxide emissions, and road transport emissions fell by 82 per cent between 1990 and 2006. This was mainly due to increased use of catalytic converters, but also to a lesser extent an increase in the proportion of diesel cars.
Emissions from residential fossil fuel use fell by 73 per cent between 1990 and 2006 mainly due to the continued decline in the use of solid fuels in favour of gas and electricity.
