e-Digest Statistics about: Air Quality
Concentrations of Carbon monoxide (CO)
Carbon monoxide reduces the capacity of the blood to carry oxygen and deliver it to the tissues. Table 14 shows CO concentrations and exceedences against Air Quality Strategy and UK criteria at automatic monitoring sites in 2006. Following public consultation in 2001, the Strategy health objective for the end of 2003 was modified to 10 mg/m3 (measured as a maximum daily running 8 hour mean in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and a running 8 hour mean in Scotland which is effectively the same) [27]. This objective was met at all sites in 2006. Figure 10 shows trends in exceedences at urban sites of the new objective level for the maximum daily running 8 hour mean.
Carbon monoxide levels remained within the 'low' band at all monitoring sites during 2006.
