The Exchequer is the Commission's sole source of income, with funding coming directly from DETR's administration vote. SDU receives an annual allocation for RCEP, which it delegates to the Secretary. This is divided into current and capital spending. Current spending is under single running cost control. Spending is reviewed part way through the year and adjustments made as necessary; additional allocations can be sought for specific needs such as computer systems/ consultancies .

In addition to direct spend, the cost to Government of running the Royal Commission includes cost of the sponsorship function, and the costs to DETR and other Departments of responding to Commission reports.
