Radioactive waste - low level waste
The review by Government (the UK Government and the devolved administrations) of the long term management of the UK’s solid low level radioactive waste (LLW), has been completed and a revised policy statement was published on 26 March 2007.
Non-nuclear industry radioactive waste strategy
In its policy statement, Government acknowledged that a UK wide strategy was needed for solid radioactive waste arising from the non-nuclear industry. Work to develop the strategy was started in 2007. Defra has determined that a sustainability appraisal for this work is not a statutory requirement, but believes that some aspects of the SA process will be beneficial in developing the strategy. A Scoping Report for the Sustainability Appraisal of the strategy (PDF 4.0 MB) has therefore been produced. An informal consultation on the Scoping Report has been programmed from 9 January to 13 February 2009. A public consultation on the strategy will be held in 2009.
