Radioactivity - EU Directives on radioactivity and radioactive substances
The European Directive 96/29/ EURATOM lays down revised basic safety standards for the protection of the health of workers and the general public against the dangers arising from ionising radiation.
The provisions of this Directive are to be implemented in the UK through a number of different Acts and regulations including the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA 93).

Defra issued a consultation document on draft regulations for the transposition of Council Directive 2003/122/Euratom on the Control of High Activity Sealed Sources and Orphan Sources (The HASS Directive) into UK law.
The HASS Directive supplements Directive 96/29/Euratom by strengthening the controls by national Governments in the European Union on sealed radioactive sources that pose the greatest risks to human health.
