Interdepartmental Group on Costs and Benefits

Noise Subject Group (IGCB(N))

The IGCB noise subject group provides advice on the economic evaluation of the noise impacts of government policy. It plays an important role in helping the government develop its understanding of the costs and benefits of reducing noise pollution. It seeks to develop and improve the appraisal methodology for policies that have noise impacts, seeking to widen the sources of noise and the impacts of noise that can be included in policy appraisal.

There are many different sources and types of noise, typically split into environmental noise, neighbourhood noise and workplace noise. The current appraisal methodology is focused on the environmental impacts of noise, those from transport and industrial sources, although the group is also exploring noise impacts from other sources.

This website outlines the underlying methodology employed by the IGCB noise subject group when evaluating the effects of government policy upon noise pollution. The website also outlines the current methodology for valuing environmental noise as well as research which is being explored to further develop the methodology.
