These information sheets are intended to help operators and personnel working on switchgear containing sulphur hexaflouride (SF₆). The owners and operators of this equipment are mainly the electricity supply industry.

SF₆ is used as an insulating gas in certain types of switchgear as it is a better electrical insulator than air and this allows “gas insulated” high voltage switches to be more compact than “air insulated” equivalents. Emissions of SF₆ from switchgear were estimated to be 4% of the 2005 UK F gas emissions.
