F gases and ODS: Alternatives

Users of F gases and ODS may want to consider ways of reducing or eliminating emissions of these greenhouse or global warming gases. One way to do this is to use an alternative.  This approach fits with the Governments policy in this area which is outlined on the Policy and Legislation page.

The information sheets provided in this section are intended to provide some guidance on the options available and the issues that should be considered when looking for alternatives to F gases and ODS.  The final decision on whether to use an alterative or not will be dependent on a number of factors including - the equipment affected, the costs involved, the suitability of a replacement in the circumstances presented  - therefore a it may be necessary to employ a contractor/consultant to advise you further.

A key consideration when looking at alternatives is that your choice is cost effective and has the lowest “overall carbon footprint”. Note that the energy related carbon dioxide emissions may be the dominant part of the overall carbon footprint. So any system using an alternative should be equal to or better than the F gas or ODS equivalent in terms of energy efficiency.

Please download our Information Sheet on this subject for each sector.

We are still in the process of researching and writing guidance for all sectors so please check back again if the Sheet for the sector you are interested in is not available yet.
