Noise and Nuisance - Research Reports

The UK National Noise Attitude Survey (NAS) 1999/2000

A survey of community response to environmental noise involving over 5,000 respondents has recently been completed and has established a year 2000 benchmark for community response to noise in the UK. The survey was undertaken for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Devolved Administrations. The survey design involved two parallel population samples and two different noise attitude questionnaires. One of the questionnaires had been used previously in England and Wales during 1991, allowing BRE to investigate changes in attitude to noise over the last 10 years. The other was similar in principle, but was updated to incorporate features arising from recent research into the best design of such questionnaires. Comparison of the results of the two questionnaires also provides useful information on the influence of questionnaire design on the responses of those interviewed.
