Research Projects

Defra has completed a number of projects to assist in development of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009. These are outlined below.

Financial Benefit Assessment of Coastal Partnerships

Defra in partnership with the Local Government Association’s Special Interest Group on Coastal Issues and the Coastal Partnerships Working Group commissioned Entec Ltd to assess the benefits to partners of working in partnership at the coast, and where possible to quantify these benefits in financial terms. The project final report and executive summary were published in July 2008.

Exploring the practical implications of the proposals for marine planning, licensing and the Marine Management Organisation in coastal areas

Our stakeholders have identified a need to more clearly understand how the new marine planning and licensing proposals might work alongside existing planning and decision making structures on land.

Defra and the Environment Agency have looked at this in more detail by conducting a desk study to explore the effects that the new proposals might have in coastal areas. Links to the final report and the case studies, are attached.
