Local government performance framework
Our thinking behind the Defra led indicators
The Local Government White Paper stated that the new framework would have an appropriate focus on climate change. Building on that commitment, we worked closely with stakeholders, including local government, to develop a set of indicators that reflect Defra’s key areas of interest - tackling climate change and waste, and measures that seek to protect our natural environment.
Defra’s indicators are the result of a rigorous selection process which included two consultations; our own informal stakeholder consultation in summer 2007, followed by CLG Consultation - Handbook of Definitions, which defined the precise nature of each indicator.
A number of indicators, led by other departments also cover environmental and other Defra related interests. These include:
- NI 6: Participation in regular volunteering
- NI 158: % decent council homes
- NI 167: Congestion - average journey time per mile during morning peak
- NI 175: Access to services and facilities by public transport, walking and cycling
- NI 198: Children traveling to school - mode of travel usually used
