Local area agreements 2008

On 30 June 2008 150 local area agreements covering the whole of England were announced between central and local government.

This is a very significant milestone, ensuring that issues that affect communities, from climate change to waste, and fuel poverty to biodiversity are tackled wherever there is a need or a particular opportunity.

Around 98% of local areas have signed up to stretching targets over three years to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and preparing communities to adapt to the consequences of climate change.

Other highlights include:

  • 138 places have selected one of the 3 waste indicators (NI 191-193);
  • 72 places have a local environmental quality indicator (NI 195);
  • 56 places have selected the climate change adaptation indicator (NI 188);
  • 40 places have a fuel poverty indicator (NI 187); and
  • 26 places have a biodiversity indicator (NI 197)

Uptake of the Defra led indicators is shown on the following maps:

More details are available below about the Defra-led aspects of the agreements, and case studies which illustrate how these will help to improve local communities.
