Local Environmental Quality: Odour and insect nuisance

Insect nuisance associated with sewage treatment works

This is the final report from a research contract let by Defra to CSL to establish the extent of insect nuisance associated with sewage treatment works.

Surveys were undertaken to assess the extent that insects emanating from sewage treatment works cause annoyance that may result in statutory nuisance.

Questionnaires were sent to all local authorities within the UK, and to all water companies with responsibility for sewage treatment.

An extensive literature search provided additional information on the extent of such problems and mechanisms for abatement.

The recommendations and the views expressed in this report are the author’s own and not necessarily those of Defra.
