Local environmental quality: Cigarette litter

Cigarette Litter Action Group

The action group was established in July 2006 to bring together government, industry, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, ENCAMS, public space managers and local authority representatives to tackle the issue of cigarette litter.

The group was formed in response to the results of The Local Environmental Quality Survey of England (LEQSE) that show that cigarette butts are the most prominent form of litter.

The objectives of the group are to:

  • Prepare local authorities, businesses and public space managers for the potential litter implications of the smoke free legislation to be introduced on the 1st July 2007.
  • Develop and promote education campaigns to promote responsible disposal.
  • Disseminate information, guidance and resources to help reduce cigarette litter including information on cleansing and disposal solutions.
  • Research and monitor levels of cigarette litter in the environment.
