LIFE: LIFE III

LIFE- III (2000 to 2006)

The LIFE III Programme is now closed to new applications. However, some of the projects agreed under this Programme in 2005 and 2006 will continue to be active until as late as 2010. It is recommended that new applicants for LIFE+, review projects previously funded through this Programme and previous LIFE Programmes to ensure that potential proposals have not already been funded by the Commission.

LIFE III-Nature

Under LIFE III, LIFE-Nature funded actions aimed at the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora. Such actions had to contribute to the implementation of the EC’s "Birds" (79/409/EEC) and "Habitats" (92/43/EEC) Directives and in particular to the establishment of the European network of protected areas - Natura 2000.

LIFE III-Environment

LIFE-Environment sought proposals in areas of EU environmental policy making highlighted by the Sixth Environmental Action Programme. It provided funding for demonstration projects developing innovative and integrated techniques and methods, which addressed Community environmental interests. Activities were supported under one of the following categories:Land use development and planning; Water management; Impacts of economic activities; Waste management; and, Integrated Production Policy. Projects were to bridge the gap between research and development results and implementation.

LIFE-Third countries

LIFE-Third countries funded technical assistance for the establishment of environmental administrative structures, nature conservation actions and demonstration actions to promote sustainable development in a range of non-EU countries. LIFE Third countries now forms part of EU European Neighbourhood Policy.
