Land: Soil

Background

The word "soil" means different things to different people. For arable farmers it is the basis for their livelihoods - the foundation for their crops. Alternatively for those in the construction industry soil is the foundation for buildings and infrastructure.

Soil covers most of the earth's land surface, varying in depth from a few centimetres to several metres. There are a number of different types of soil, according to the amount of sand, silt, clay, organic matter, water and air they contain.
