Contaminated Land - organisations and networks
Contaminated land is an area of growing interest here in the UK, Europe and internationally. An increasing number of organisations provide and share knowledge and research on contaminated land. We have grouped some of these below, but there are many more.
UK organisations
Defra Contaminated Land Forum
The Defra Contaminated Land Forum has recently been established to help improve links with the contaminated land community, particularly in the field of policy development. This follows the winding up of the Soil Guideline Value Task Force. Defra has invited some key representative organisations to join the Forum to exchange views and information.

EIC - Environmental Industries Commission
The Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) was launched in 1995 to provide the environmental technology and services industry with a strong and effective voice within Government in the debate about how to ensure that British companies succeed in the growing world market.
To assist those involved in contaminated land regeneration EIC have created The Land Remediation Yearbook, to bring together leading experts from the public and private sectors to set out all the key issues facing those seeking to tackle contaminated land and provide a reference tool for sourcing information on suppliers of land remediation services.
CL:AIRE - Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments
CL:AIRE is a public/private partnership that is playing a major part in driving forward the Government's commitment to sustainable remediation of contaminated land. It works closely with site owners, technology vendors and researchers to bring together sites and new or innovative remediation technologies and it has a range of relevant publications, other information and weblinks.

Land Restoration Trust
A consortium including English Partnerships, Groundwork, the Forestry Commission and the Environment Agency has set up a "Land Restoration Trust" that will acquire "uneconomic" derelict/under-used land and in cooperation with local management partners create valuable community assets. The scheme has a three-year "pilot phase" during which it aims to secure the restoration and management of some 1,500 ha, establishing partnership working systems to enable a portfolio of 10,000 ha by 2010, an area the size of Coventry.

Europe and International organisations
EUGRIS - European Ground Water and Contaminated Land Remediation Information System.
EUGRIS is a web-based user-friendly information platform for contaminated land and groundwater information. It provides overviews of policy and regulations, research project information, technical information and information from the European Union and its Member States. It also provides a news service directory of contacts in the field and an opportunity for you to post your own information. It is funded by the European Commission.
CLARINET - Contaminated Land Rehabilitation Network for Environmental
Technologies in Europe
CLARINET is an EC funded project following up CARACAS. It brought together policymakers, academics, land owners and technology developers from 16 European countries, with the objective of developing integrated approaches to the rehabilitation of contaminated land in Europe. Its steering group and 7 working groups have looked at different aspects of the contaminated land problem (brownfield redevelopment; risk management and decision support systems; protection of water resources; management of R&D programmes; ecological aspects; human health aspects and remediation technology).
- Final outputs are available on www.clarinet.at/. or www.r3environmental.co.uk.
- CLAN 1/03 (PDF 30 KB) describes the project from the UK viewpoint.

Nicole was created to bring together problem holders and researchers throughout Europe to stimulate, dissemination and exchange of knowledge about aspects of industrially contaminated land. It membership comes from both the private and public sectors, universities, research and governmental organisations.
NATO/Committee for Challenges to Modern Society
