Research programme

Welcome to the joint Defra and Environment Agency flood and coastal erosion risk management research and development programme. The aims of the Joint Programme are to:

  • address the needs of all flood and coastal defence authorities
  • help inform policy development
  • ensure that flood and coastal erosion risk management measures are delivered in a technically and environmentally sound and cost-effective manner
  • bridge the gap between work carried out by others (basic scientific research) and the development of operational systems.

The Joint Programme comprises of four themes, as detailed in the Programme Definition Document (PDF 381KB):

Outputs from our research take the form of research reports and papers to conferences, seminars and scientific journals. You can also access project information and publications through the Defra/EA Project Search Tool.
