ACT ON CO2 campaign

The ACT ON CO2 campaign, supported by online advertising, aims to raise awareness of the link between personal behaviour and climate change. The campaign highlights the wide range of individual behaviours that cause CO2 emissions and the impact we have on climate change. Over 40 percent of CO2 emissions in the UK are the direct result of domestic and private travel behaviours – collective personal decisions have a huge public impact.

ACT ON CO2 calculator - background and methodology

The ACT ON CO2 Calculator is an engaging and simple web-based tool that allows people to calculate their personal or household carbon footprint. Users can compare their footprint to the UK statistical average to see how they compare with other people. The Calculator also provides an Action Plan with a list of personalised recommendations about how to reduce carbon emissions.

This information tool has been developed as part of the “ACT ON CO2” campaign.

Methodology

The project provides transparency in methodology and data as a goal in its own right but also to assist the development of similar calculators. Detailed information about the methodology is available:

The software that runs the back-end calculating “engine” is open source, and is, with the support of the Government, being licensed by the software developers, AMEE limited under “open licenses” such as the GNU General Public License. For more information go to http://blog.co2.dgen.net/

In this way, we hope to add value to other campaigns and reach new audiences in our collective efforts to tackle climate change. Other organisations may also have ideas that could be incorporated into revisions to the ACT ON CO2 Calculator and underlying engine.
