Kyoto Mechanisms - Clean Development Mechanism External Guidance

Establishing A CDM Project

CDM Projects must established in accordance with procedures and processes elaborated by the CDM Executive Board at International Level.

Project Preparation

Projects must use a methodology to calculate emission reductions (which may be new or approved) and be validated by a designated operational entity established for the purpose. Projects require both host approval from a non-Annex I party and approval from an Annex I party.

Project Registration

Projects are registered following validation and a period of public comment on the application of a DOE.

  • For a list of projects under public comment, having applied for registration please see CDM Pages on Projects

Issuance of Credits

CERS are issued following verification of emission reductions by a DoE on the request of project participants and parties involved

Getting a UK Registry Account

To receive credits from CDM projects (CERs) or from JI projects (ERUs) you will need a person holding account in the UK Registry. For further information see our UK Registry page.

You can apply for an account online at the Registry website, where you will be prompted to send certain information to the Environment Agency for checking, along with the requisite fee.

Further Advice

The UK Climate Change Projects Office (CCPO) provides advice and support to businesses on projects. The CCPO is funded jointly by Defra and the Department of Trade and Industry. Their website contains a number of useful business guides including information on CDM.
