As part of the UK/Japan joint research project on Low Carbon Societies, Japan hosted the third and final workshop in Japan. The workshop focused on the synergies in developing low carbon societies and sustainable development. The first workshop examined scenarios developed by energy modellers around the world in moving towards a low carbon society and the second workshop examined the practical steps required in achieving low carbon societies. President Bush announced the Major Economies meeting in May 2007, and it was subsequently endorsed by the G8 leaders at the Heiligendamm summit. The meeting, brought together 20 of the world’s Major Economies to discuss international action in tackling climate change. The meeting provided an opportunity for countries to voice their positions ahead of Bali, and demonstrated the United States’ increased engagement on climate change since the Heiligendamm Summit. President Bush reiterated at the meeting the need to advance negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. - 24 September 2007
United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, convenes the first-ever meeting of heads of state and government focused on climate change. This high-level meeting focused on securing political commitment and building momentum for the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali where negotiations about a new international climate agreement should start. - 6-8 June 2007
At the G8 summit at Heiligendamm, Germany G8 leaders issued a statement calling for strong and early action and sent a clear signal to the UNFCCC meeting in Bali on the need to launch talks immediately on a post-2012 climate change framework in order to conclude by 2009. The G8 has stated that a global emission reduction goal must be agreed, involving all major emitters, and taking account of the European goal to halve emissions by 2050.
