International action - Working with developing countries

We work with developing countries to help them improve their understanding of the effects of climate change.

Funding: international Environmental Transformation Fund and Climate Investment Funds

The international Environmental Transformation Fund (ETF) is a £800m joint DFID/Defra fund, announced in Budget 2007. The aim is to reduce poverty through environmental protection and helping developing countries respond to climate change. The Climate Investment Funds are two multi-donor Funds - the Clean Technology Fund and the Strategic Climate Fund – which will help developing countries respond to the wide range of challenges posed by climate change, focusing on supporting climate resilient and low carbon development. Understanding the costs of adaptation

The UK has recently announced a joint project with the Netherlands and the World Bank to better understand the costs associated with adapting to climate change. This will help developing countries integrate adaptation into national development planning, and will provide the international community a better idea of the scale of response that will be necessary.

Regional climate change model

The Government funds the application of a regional climate change model (PRECIS) in developing countries to improve our collective understanding of the effects of climate change e.g. through projects with India, China and Bangladesh.  This work involves the development of new approaches to vulnerability assessment and adaptation, and building capacity through promotion of the transfer of methodologies and approaches form the UK.

UK International Climate and Energy Technology Initiatives

One of the UK Government’s key objectives is to bring about a step change in global investment in low carbon technologies. We are working through the European Union, G8 and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to develop and support a number of bilateral and multilateral initiatives to promote investment in low carbon energy, particularly energy efficiency in developing countries. Please see our UK International Climate and Energy Technology Initiatives brochure, a Defra lead cross government collaboration for further details.
