SCP evidence base research

Defra is developing a Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) evidence base. In order to inform UK SCP policy, an evidence generation programme encompassing a diverse range of Research & Development projects is in place. Our intention is that the evidence base should be valued and used not only by Defra, but also by others inside and outside government.

Defra has adopted a broad interpretation of ‘evidence’, to include data, analysis, and stakeholder views.  Defra is also clarifying how sources of evidence fit together and identifying gaps or uncertainty in the evidence base through reviews and scoping studies and robust research.  Robustness is interpreted as incorporating credibility, reliability and objectivity, as well as the extent to which the evidence is rooted in a wider understanding of the issue and the extent to which it can be generalised to infer broader conclusions.

The SCP evidence programme is currently  structured around the following four themes:

Details of the research projects are listed under the four themes, with links to project outlines where available.

Current SCP projects being competitively tendered or open to expressions of interest are listed on Defra Research Competition page.
