Making More with Less - PIU report

The Performance and Innovation Unit published (20 November 2001) a report to the Government focusing attention on the use of natural resources.

It noted that most of the pressures on our environment are created by the ways in which we all carry out our day-to-day activities. The report set out a number of initiatives that could help us make more productive and sustainable use of our natural resources, building on the considerable progress already made in the UK.

Government has acknowledged the importance of the issues raised, and has signed up to the implementation and dissemination programme. The Prime Minister and the Secretaries of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and for Trade and Industry have all welcomed the report.

Defra has the lead role in taking forward the overall report, and is working with DTI and Treasury, who lead on some individual recommendations, and other Departments.

Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said,

"Making more productive use of resources is essential for the future health of our environment, businesses and society. Some progress has been made, but much more needs to be done. I welcome the PIU's report and commit my Department to taking a strong lead in its implementation."
