Interdepartmental Group on Costs and Benefits

Introduction

The Defra-led Interdepartmental Group on Costs and Benefits (IGCB) is a group of government economists and other experts that provides economic analysis and advice relating to the development and achievement of the Air Quality Strategy – 2007.

The remit of the group is to provide as comprehensive an assessment as possible of all the relevant costs and benefits associated with measures required to meet current or proposed Air Quality Strategy objectives.

It plays an important role in helping Defra - and the government more widely - develop its understanding of the costs and benefits of reducing air pollution, and seeks to continually improve the appraisal methodology used for policies that reduce air pollution.

The group consists of government economists and other experts from all relevant Departments including: Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Department for Transport, Department of Health, Department of Trade and Industry, Cabinet Office, Health Protection Agency, Department of Environment for Northern Ireland, Environment Agency for England and Wales, HM Treasury, Scottish Environment Protection Agency, The National Assembly for Wales and The Scottish Executive.
